As promised in my blog last month, I will be preparing a different iteration of the “burger” each month (Check out my Grilled Cheese Bacon Burger and Pizza Burger) - and sharing not only the recipe with you – but also my opinions/thoughts/review. To all my fellow unhealthy eaters out there, let me begin by assuring you that my future burgers will not be quite this healthy (to put your minds at ease). I got the idea for the pita burger in speaking to my brother Jason, who is a big fan of a chopped salad that I make from time to time and said to me “this would be delicious in a pita with a hamburger patty”. We both looked at each other and kinda laughed at the thought of the two of us actually eating a pita salad burger – but I figured “what the hell” and decided to give it a shot.
This iteration of the burger was surprisingly refreshing – and didn’t make me full and sleepy like huge bacon cheeseburgers would (not that full and sleepy is a bad thing). The blend of the balsamic and the strong flavor of the gorgonzola cheese worked together well to combine with the flavor of the meat and create a very interesting blend. I think most people would enjoy this dish but I caution you that most burger lovers will take issue with this being considered a true “hamburger” in the traditional sense. In any event – it was pretty tasty! Let me know what you think if you try it.
Okay…………Here is how it is made.
Ingredients – makes 2 pita burgers:
½ cup cubed fresh mozzarella
¼ cup of red, yellow or green pepper
½ cup chopped onion
¼ of a cucumber (pealed & cubed)
½ cup of shredded lettuce
2 Hamburger Patties
¼ cup of gorgonzola cheese
2 round pita pockets
8 oz of hamburger meat (any blend of cuts & meats as desired – I used chuck)
¼ cup of balsamic vinegar
1 tblsp of olive oil
Salt and pepper as desired
Step By Step Instructions – This recipe makes 2 pita burgers:
1. In a mixing bowl, mix the chopped mozzarella, pepper, cucumber, lettuce, gorgonzola & balsamic vinegar – and let it sit in the bowl while you complete the rest of the steps to drink up the vinegar.
2. Put olive oil in a small frying pan and allow to heat on medium for 3 minutes. Then add the onions. Cook for approx 5 minutes or until the onions are browned (add salt as desired). Once brown, set aside in a mixing bowl (separate from salad mix).
3. Once onions have cooled for approx 3-5 minutes, add the chop meat to the bowl. Mix well with the onions. Add salt and pepper as you like (or not). Once mixed well, shape the meat into 2 four oz patties using a hamburger press (if you have one - if not, just use your hands to shape the patties).
4. In the same frying pan as the onions were cooked, cook the hamburger patties to the temperature as desired. Once cooked, chop the meat into chunks (I know, this is a no-no for burger enthusiasts as some of the juice will escape but I saw no other way). As you can see, I also over-cooked my meat (even for my taste).
5. Once the burgers are cooked and chopped – toast the pita lightly (not very dark or it will crack) – then, using a spoon, put a couple of spoon fulls of the salad mixture into the pita – then add the burger chunks – followed by some more salad until the pita is packed up. Use any remaining salad as a side salad & ENJOY!
